Sexaholics Anonymous - Statement of Principle

We have a solution. We don't claim that it's for everybody, but for us, it works. If you identify with us and think you may share our problem, we'd like to share our solution with you. (Sexaholics Anonymous, last paragraph, page 2)

In defining sobriety, we do not speak for those outside Sexaholics Anonymous. We can only speak for ourselves. Thus, for the married sexaholic, sexual sobriety means having no form of sex with self or with persons other than the spouse. In SA's sobriety definition, the term "spouse" refers to one's partner in a marriage between a man and a woman. For the unmarried sexaholic, sexual sobriety means freedom from sex of any kind. And for all of us, single and married alike, sexual sobriety also includes progressive victory over lust. (Sexaholics Anonymous, 191-192)

The only requirement for SA membership is a desire to stop lusting and become sexually sober according to the SA sobriety definition.

Any two or more sexaholics gathered together for SA sobriety according to the SA sobriety definition may call themselves an SA group.

Meetings that do not adhere to and follow Sexaholics Anonymous' sobriety statement as set forth in the foregoing Statement of Principle adopted by the General Delegate Assembly in 2010 are not SA meetings and shall not call themselves SA meetings.

Addendum to the Statement of Principle passed by the General Delegate Assembly on July 8, 2016: Moved to publish the Statement of Principle in all SAICO literature, Essay, SA.org home page, SA Service Manual, and through the SA service structure.

San Diego Area SA Meetings

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop lusting and become sexually sober.

This program is for men and women 18 years and older. Please be prepared to provide proof of age (ID).

Newcomers must attend an orientation before attending a regular meeting. While this orientation may have been done at a different SA meeting location, some individual meetings may insist on doing their own orientation for people new to that meeting.

The Rosecrans facility has security video surveillance in corridors and entrances.
Visitors must sign in at the main desk. These meetings are marked with an asterisk (*).

Open vs Closed Meetings

All SA meetings in San Diego County are "closed meetings." That is, they are open only to those who want to stop their own personal sexually self-destructive thinking and behavior. Keeping meetings closed (open to sexaholics only) helps protect the members so they can feel free to focus on recovery in a safe environment.

Non-sexaholics interested in observing an SA meeting are advised instead to attend an "open meeting" of another 12-Step fellowship, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, which has both open and closed meetings.

Meeting Attire Guidelines

We want to make our meeting a comfortable and secure place for all sexaholics. For that reason, we try to be careful that our dress doesn't act as a trigger to others. Please be considerate of other SA members in choice of attire. If you are not certain what is appropriate, see a regular group member after the meeting.

    "SA Daily Meditation Book"

SA members are invited to submit manuscript (one page) describing their experience, strength and hope in dealing with life's issues--anger, depression, fear, easy does it, ego, powerlessness, principles vs. personalities, the promises, amends, selfishness, self-pity, honesty, open-mindedness, willingness, tolerance, live and let live, service, or whatever else challenges or inspires you.

By viewing life's issues in the context of each contributor's program and by reflecting how the program has helped recovery, the book will aid members in their study and meditation on the Twelve Step program of SA. Readers will gain greater insight into what we mean when we say we have found a common solution.

Those among us familiar with meditation books published by other 12 step programs (e.g., AA's As Bill Sees It and Al-Anon's Courage to Change) can attest to the value of daily spiritual readings. Now, with your help, SA can offer similar strength, refuge and serenity by publishing its daily meditation book.

    Suggested Format:

    1. Short quote
    2. Three or so paragraphs about the topic.
    3. One sentence prayer.

    Example:

    "My Source of Strength"

"In a very real sense he has laid hold of a source of strength which in one way or another, he had hitherto denied himself." (Twelve and Twelve, p. 110)

Lack of power, that has been my dilemma. Not only am I powerless over lust, I am powerless over everything else.

The things that have given me the most problems over the last few years of my recovery have been my income, the behavior of other people around me (especially my family members, people I interact with in my work, and other SA members), and my health. The struggle to keep things going, according to my plans, has ended each time with my defeat because I lacked the required power.

Where do I go from there? There is only one place—the surrender of Step One. I take the problem to the God of my understanding, who lovingly lifts it from my shoulders and reminds me that the challenge for me in this life is to have faith—faith in His love for me and in His plans for my joy, happiness, and abundance. And as I look back, I see that He has kept His promise. The money I've needed has always been there (and no more)! My work has prospered. I was convinced that my sister was headed for disaster, but it never happened. The SA meetings, the intergroup, and the fellowship at large are all doing great.

Prayer: Beloved Higher Power, please let me remember that I am but a small part of the universal plan and that You are the Master of it all. Help me to be willing today to surrender all my fears and doubts to You, and to have faith in Your absolute love for me and Your wonderful plans for my life.

    S-Anon & S-Ateen San Diego

Hope & help for family & friends of sexaholics:

S-Anon is a program of recovery for those who have been affected by someone else's sexual behavior. S-Anon is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. The primary purpose of S-Anon is to recover from the effects of another person's sexaholism, and to help families and friends of sexaholics.

    For the Teenager:

S-Ateen is a Twelve Step program for teenagers who have been affected by the sexual behavior of a relative or friend. The meetings follow S-Anon's Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. S-Ateen meetings are conducted separately from those of S-Anon, and are guided by adult S-Anon sponsors.
